I’ve been using more and more custom sentences in my review process, and noticed two things that I can’t figure out.
-
The same custom review sentences keep cycling in my review pile. No matter how many times I complete them, they never phase out. I expected them to work as an addendum to normal review sentences, get introduced and cleared over time, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. If that isn’t a feature, I’d like to request it, otherwise every custom sentences is just a gremlin that never goes away, making it harmful rather than useful.

I have all of my standard review sentences set to flash card review rather than fill in the blank. However, all of my custom sentences are stuck as fill in the blank. I’ve gone to the deck and “Refreshed all cards” but the custom sentences won’t switch to flash card reviews.
Probably my biggest gripe against Bunpro (which has been amazing and helped me immensely overall!) is that the review sentences are often not graded to the level of the student in terms of the vocabulary used and the other grammar structures used in the sentence. I’ve been harvesting practice sentences from other sources that use simple vocabulary and ancillary grammar structures so that I can lock in on what is “new” about the grammar being drilled. This is filling in the gap left by the unnecessarily complex standard sentences, but these two issues are making the experience pretty unpleasant. At this point, I’m feeling a little like it would be more useful to study grammar lessons from a book and create or use a grammar Anki deck instead of using Bunpro, since the only feature that I care about that Bunpro has beyond that setup is the grammar mastery tracker chart.
Let me know if I’m missing anything. I hope Bunpro is hearing me that an overhaul of the review sentences, including the graded difficulty of the standard review sentences, and fixing how custom sentences integrate with the review cycles, is the most important functional improvement that they could make. Forget flashy new features. I want core functionality improvement with a focus on good, solid pedagogy. Everything else is a distraction.
