Feedback - Suggested Improvements/Feature Request

I looked all over the settings before posting, but couldn’t find a feature like this.

Turns out this option doesn’t show up in the Android app.
I configured it using the Web UI, thanks a lot

I figured that I can also offset the start of day time by changing the timezone, but this doesn’t feel like it’s intended and might cause issues when travelling across timezones.

Ok now I’m confused.

I could find this yesterday, on the main Decks page. Today I’ve looked again and it’s not there.

I’m not opted into a beta program, and both times I was using the same interface, i.e. using the web version. To be more specific, using the web version after “Add to Home Screen” which installs the web version as an app.

I tried doing all of today’s scheduled lessons in case the app was waiting for me to do that first, but I still don’t see it.

I actually took a screenshot yesterday and it looked like this:

Now today it looks like this:

Edited to add: found it! Now it’s moved to the deck details page. I guess this is an update. There’s now a Review button here:

Yup! The button on the front of the deck got moved. Jake responded in a post and said it was because it was really slowing down load times on the decks page, and they plan to add a bunch more decks in the future. However, they did acknowledge that there was more sadness than they expected upon the removal of the button. There’s a few relevant posts that came up about it (including my obituary lol).

Thanks for the suggestion!

“Alternate” audio mode was silently added to the website.
Will include it as part of a bigger announcement in the near future.

Hello,

I’ve a suggestion as well, not sure if it already got suggested or not…
But, sometimes I have grammar point I get during my reviews I want to cram immediately.
Getting to the cram section and THEN searching for that specific grammar point is always a bit of an effort.

Could we add an button on its grammar site itself? Kinda like this?

Would it be possible to see a bookmark icon in bookmark items in both search and deck pages? I like to bookmark things because anything above N4 it’s too hard for now (or sometimes to simply save vocab to add another day).

Loving Bunpro!

At the moment, when reviewing you can have the audio of the sentence be played automatically when you get the answer right. It would be great to also have the option to have only the audio of the word automatically played instead.

I want to be able to make sure that my pronunciation of each word I review is correct, but I have hundreds of reviews every day so waiting for the full sentence audio to play adds a lot of time to my reviewing. For me, I actually only want to hear the audio of the specific vocab word before moving on.

お疲れ様!! Thanks for all the hard work!

As much as I feel conflicted writing this, not least because it’s kinda the opposite of a feature request, I wonder if we could have say a 1-month window before JLPT exams when Bunpro’s state is kinda frozen for those few weeks until the exam, without any big changes?

Of course, little things like fixing typos would be good, and hopefully work on the site can continue in the background, with any new features released soon after the JLPT exams.

I really appreciate all of the latest updates to Bunpro and really hope to check them out more as soon as possible after the JLPT exams, but I have to say that currently I feel like they’re tempting me away from JLPT study right now … which is exactly what I hope to achieve through using this site! Hope that makes sense, and I write it with admiration and very much looking forwards to enjoying the new features soon!

We actually do a code freeze for at least the 2 weeks before the exam (unless we need to hotfix some small bug), mainly so we don’t break anything or make drastic changes that could negatively impact people.

That being said, since the new decks is beta only, you could turn beta off until after the test (or I could forcibly do it for you :joy: ). Decks is the only thing in beta currently and will still be there after you have taken the test, and might even be better than it is now.

This PLS!! hearing just the target word would be so helpful. I had to turn audio off when blazing through vocab because I don’t want to wait for the entire sentence, but hearing just the vocab helps solidify it into memory for me. But I still want to be able to read the sentences.

Side note I just thought of, how difficult would it be to add a card option that has just vocab reveal and grade. Where it shows you just the target vocab word in Japanese, and you flip into a random sentence from that vocab. Or have it appear under the vocab on flip, that way you can check furigana quickly with the vocab but itself, but still be exposed to the sentence easily if you want to check context.

edit, just poked around the different review styles and it would be exactly like translate question/reveal and grade, just with the added benefit of a sentence appearing underneath the vocab definition to be able to quickly refernce a context

I’m guessing “M” means “months”, not “minutes” or “milliseconds” (or “microseconds” or …). Could be worth clarifying because I don’t think it’s so clear:

This has probably been brought up before, or maybe it hasn’t, or maybe it’s already a feature and I don’t know it, I don’t know.

I like BunPro a lot more than WaniKani for a lot of reasons. But I think one thing I prefer about WK is the way its does its reviews. I slack off and end up with a ton of reviews – I haven’t gone on WK for months now so I have something silly like 2800 reviews. I just caught up here after having ~800 reviews (down to 0 now, yay). But it feels like it’s a lot easier to catch up on WK than on BP because of the way reviews are. On WK, I can just jump right in. I think it cycles between ten to review at a time. If I mess up all ten (which does happen), then I gotta do those ten again in some random order. But let’s say I pass one (thank god), then, the next one might be a review that I previously messed up, or it could be a new one introduced. It cycles through, which is nice. I feel like I can go through 100, 200 at a time, or just stop at like 20 or 30. Smooth.

Not the same here. Here, I can’t just dive into 800 reviews because (to my knowledge) I would have to go through all 800 before it cycles again. That is, unless I limit my reviews to however so many at a time, which I do. Right now, I do 5 at a time. So I do the 5, if I screw up I gotta do one or two (or 5) over, then the summary page, then another 5. It’s a bit annoying when I’m trying to catch up on several hundred reviews and I gotta stop every 30 seconds, every minute for another page I gotta click through.

I guess what I’m wondering is is there any way to make reviews like the way they are on WaniKani? Is that already a feature? Is that something that could become a feature?

Noted. Showing a sentence with the Translate/Reveal&Grade system is something we’ve discussed in the past.

@IcyIceBear
Interesting suggestion RE just playing the target Vocab.
Would need to be a separate setting.

If Bunpro had a feature to bury cards until next day like in Anki (Studying - Anki Manual), I would use it, either manually or automatically.

Lately I’m only adding new grammar to SRS when encountering it “in the wild”, and most of the time I would immediately create a custom sentence too.
It works fine, but both custom sentence and the main SRS end up on the same schedule, and therefore work as hints for each other.
I think it would be nice to have an option to postpone one of them till the next day, when the short-term hint buff wears off, and the memory can be more properly stimulated.

I’d love if the bunpro vocab decks had more logical grouping. For example, making 北 東 南 西 appear one after another instead of the (seemingly random) order (maybe even grouped as the same lesson).

Also, I’d love if bunpro somehow taught numbers better in the vocab section
(like how to pronounce 一日, 二日 etc and 一時 二時, and 一分 二分 etc…) (I know the days exist as part of a genki extra category, but for the times of day for example i could only find 一時, so even a custom deck wouldn’t be an option)
I know that that’s usually wanikani’s purpose but I’d love it if these kinds of pronunciations were there in bunpro since I don’t have a wanikani subscription

I found a potential bug for travellers. I travelled overseas and did my daily study before midnight in the new country without noticing that it was past midnight in my home country. Because of that I lost my study streak. This was a little over 2 weeks ago. I made a feedback post but haven’t heard back yet. Would you be able to fix my streak? And if this isn’t intended, would be nice to prevent it from happening. I’m not sure if it can go by local clock time. Thanks Jake.

You can adjust your streak at anytime in your settings>reset at the bottom of page. Take care not to reset anything else you don’t want to.

If you’ll be in that time zone for a while you might want to change those settings to reflect that. That’s under settings>general

Do you know kanji grid? It’s an add-on for Anki that scans the cards in your deck and generates a graph showing all of the kanji that you know (and a drop-down where you can see all of the ones you don’t know). It also uses a heatmap where you can see how well you know the kanji based on your review history. Kanji are grouped together by a user-selected option such as JLPT level, grade school level, kanken level, etc. It also gives you a total of how many kanji you know.

I used to have a really big mining deck in Anki and I obsessed over this add-on (as did a lot of my online friends at the time) because it was wonderful as a visualization of acquired knowledge. As I saw the grid become filled out further and further I noticed my understanding of Japanese grow more and more. It was always exciting to run the extension every day and see if any new kanji were added.

Now that Bunpro has vocab, it would be really cool to include this as a feature. Especially if it could output a printable poster or something that I can hang on my wall and be proud of
