Feedback - Suggested Improvements/Feature Request

If my answer to a vocab review is wrong, I usually assume that my answer was an unregistered synonym and keep guessing for the correct answer. But at least some of my wrong guesses are likely not valid at all.

It could be good to have an automatic synonym check for a wrong answer using an LLM or something (to make up for the fact that we haven’t yet registered every synonym for every word on Bunpro).

Sorry if this has already been requested a bunch. I would really love to be able to see who I replied to in my comments on the forums, without opening up the edit menu.

Because I expect to see the little reply icon, I always have a brief worry that I accidentally replied to the post and not a specific comment. It would be nice to be able to see the icon on your own posts.

This is basically expanding on our existing Wrong Answer / Alternate Answer (leading hint) system – the good news is we have plans to do this already!

I too find it super frustrating not knowing if my answer is correct just not accounted for, or completely wrong.

Until then, feel free to submit alternate answers using our Report system.

Do we have a missing words thread, and do you even want to be notified if we notice missing words? If so:

イライラ is missing, even though it was in the example sentence こっちまでイライラしてきた

edit: wait, they are all in the list, just using hiragana

I’d love to have an option to re-add mastered items into the queue periodically and when you get it false demote it respectively.

I think it might be useful to be able to add a filter the available decks and textbooks under the Decks tab! The search bar is great as it is, but maybe something that allows you to sort the decks you’ve already completed to the bottom of the page would be good too. Thanks!

Hi, trying out bunpro, I’m not so sure how feedbacks are treated here but about the offline resources in the grammar, i noticed that things like the 3rd edition genki grammar deck doesn’t have offline resource references to 3rd edition. It will be great if these are also included in the offline resources, not sure if future grammar references have this issue. Otherwise I think it’s great :slightly_smiling_face:

Wish we could increase the number of times a specific grammar point/vocabulary item showed up in a cram session. Say if I’m struggling with a something but just want to review some other things, I could have the thing I’m struggling with show up five times, while everything else only once.

@rell34

Being able to select specific “study focuses” would be very cool.

I noticed on the io s app that long holding a vocab on the grammar lessons sentences that sometimes it displays the entry in the built in dictionary but sometimes it just toggles on the furigana without going to the dictionary. It will be great if it’s consistent so we can view vocab/add some vocab directly to review from grammar lessons

Hello, please correct me if I’m wrong, but I couldn’t find a grammar explanation for なきゃよかった (the casual version of なければよかった) - which maybe should be an appendix ばよかった.
Even if I’ve completed all the grammar points on Bunpro, I was a bit puzzled when I come across it multiple times in Netflix dramas.

Please add an option to increase just the font size of reviews without bloating the entire interface on mobile (I’m on web, not app) or at least add an 18px option between the current 16px and 20px.

And while we’re at it, please let us set that size separately for mobile and desktop site

This might be something very specific and I’m not sure if other users would consider it helpful, but I would love to have a way to mark example sentences as favorites and to browse through them.

The reason is that sometimes during reviews I find amazing sentences like this:
人は家では、階段から落ちたり熱いお茶でやけどしたりする場合も少なくない

Being in mid-N4 level, I think this one was pretty awesome as it conveys quite a bunch of previous grammar points that were already seen, and with all the vocabulary fitting in the N5 deck. While I agree that there’s no need to understand everything in a sentence to get the context, in cases when this happens it allows me to dedicate a bit more of time on it for listening and shadowing.

So right now I’m just pasting these sentences in a different notes app, but if there was a way to do that in Bunpro itself, it would be very convenient.

Thanks as always for the great work!

Personally I ghost such sentences, so I get to review them in my SRS. But you could also bookmark them and then use the cram feature to review.

Would this already help?

I thought about ghosting it, but it would only make it appear in the next few following days until I slayed the ghost. I was thinking about something more long term that allowed me to cram through all my favorite sentences, even old ones.

Bookmarking is also only available for lessons and vocab as a whole, right? My interest is more in specific sentences tho. But thanks for the recommendation! By the moment, I’ll keep saving them in another app.

Not a bad idea!

I have noticed when learning new vocabulary that the sample audio will often not match the pitch accent markings.

That being said, the example sentence audio seems to be closer to correct (to my beginners ear at least). And that’s where it matters, more so than a single word being said in isolation.

But I’m just curious as to why the pronunciation sounds off to me for single words.

A small suggestion for the search function. I think it’d be nice if there was some kind of visual indicator to tell you which category words are in. It’s fine if you already know which word you’re looking for, but it can get cumbersome if not. Right now, you’re presented with a big list of results that all just say “vocab”, and you have to click in and out of each one to check their categories.

I heard a word in the wild, せいせき,and looked it up and had to do some sifting to find the right word. For some reason two unclassified nouns actually come up first before the N5 JLPT word! Sure enough, the JLPT word was the one I’d heard (成績). So maybe a secondary suggestion is to have a sort function or prioritise JLPT words higher by default.

I’ve run in to a couple grammar points in the wild that I haven’t seen on here.

The first is つもりだった meaning “I thought I…” “I was planning to…” which other sites categorize as an N3 level grammar point.

e.g. コーヒーを注文したつもりだった。(I thought I ordered coffee).

私はそのメールを送ったつもりだった。(I meant to send that email).

教えていただいたときは、わかったつもりでしたが、後で自分でやってみたらできませんでした。(When I was being taught how to do it, I thought I understood it, but when I tried to do it myself later, I couldn’t do it).

The second is hard for me to put in words but it’s using Xように as a sort of example to reference.
e.g. ウェブサイトに書いてあるように、この美術館は水曜日が休館日です。(As stated on the website, the museum is closed on Wednesdays).

この図に示されているように、人口は年々増加しています。(As shown in this chart, the population is increasing year by year).

先ほど説明したように、このボタンを押すと画面が変わります。(As explained earlier, pressing this button will change the screen).

I’d love to see these added to the grammar list on here.

Similar to the earlier comment about font sizes, I would love it if we could set the Japanese and English font sizes separately (or even just have an option to boost the kanji size the same way you have for the furigana).

I sometimes have very bad vision (intermittent symptom of an illness) and when it’s bad, in order to read the kanji, I need to have my font set so large that the English becomes huge and takes up a ton of room.

Realise this is probably something that affects me more than most, but thought there may be others who find the kanji small relative to the other content. Anyway, it’s just a ‘nice to have’ as there is a way for me to still read it, but thought as this thread was here, it couldn’t hurt to mention. Thanks for all the hard work you do!
