Have you done your BunPro Review today?

WK reviews and 20 lessons so I can do only 15 today and finish of level 7 vocab. Tomorrow I’ll do all the radicals for level 8.

BP reviews and 3 lessons: じゃなかった, Verb[ない], and から(from). Some of my mistakes are just not paying attention with so many negatives and getting tenses right and politeness, I typically forget one and almost never the politeness one which BP tends to be lenient on. So my ghost count is growing bigger. I think I currently have 10, but I don’t know if all of them always show on the summery page. Also noticing that after I’ve seen a ghost a few times, I just remember the answer because I recognize the sentence, so it doesn’t really become practicing the grammar point as much anymore.

I wish i-adjectives, nouns, verbs, and na-adjectives were the same for だけ and から(because). Trying to remember when to add な, na-adjectives for だけ (だだけ is something I’ve realized isn’t a thing, hopefully it won’t turn out to be in the future, that is how I remember right now because だだけ sounds wrong), and when to add だ/です for から, na-adjectives and nouns because their special. (I guess I might do i-adjectives wrong for whichever one had special circumstance for it, but since I haven’t gotten a review on that yet, or it was the first one so I still remembered then… I don’t even remember which of them had the special i-adjective く thing.)

I referred to this.

And about onomatope book, I tried searching someone who recommended about it, but I couldn’t find it again, sorry. Instead, I found this interesting thread. It’s a different book though. As far as I remember the guy’s avatar who posted about onomatope is a kung fu master or something.

Good evening!

  • At last, I hit 0 review again both on WK & BP!
  • Blackout happened almost everyday. You don’t want to know how I must cross long and wide river in my jungle to get electricity and internet. Of course it’s an exaggeration. Oops!
  • If the sun still rises as usual, I’ll probably level up to WK Level 22 in 1 day 2 hours from now. And of course, what I mean is, if I don’t fail on some kanji to apprentice again instead of guru them. Hark!! D:<
  • BP Study Streak 43 despite blackout. In other word: Yes, I still strive to hit 0 review both on WK & BP even if I don’t post something here because of the unreliable internet/electricity.
  • I mostly read and watched Japanese grammars these past days. No BP new lessons. I want to watch again Misa Sensei’s latest vlog where she said お母さんがパソコンを買ってくれた。And お母さんがパソコンをくれた。before she said that. I handwrote that. No, I won’t share my ugly handwriting. I stopped practising handwriting for more than 2 weeks D:<<< I also read again about 'n desu on my favourite book because Frosty asked on WK forum, Idk her username here yet. And I also read and reread again and again about morau. Yup. This is all because of my English limit. I can’t just easily and quickly read book(s) and any other English writing(s) and just understand them.
  • Some screenshots, but no explanation, because I think it’s clear from the screenshot about what mistake I made, and what I should (re)learn/internalize.

On my BP reviews: Forgot it was past tense instead of て form for ほうがいい. Also it was asking me for 行きましょうか but I answered 行きませんか. Maybe I should learn the difference between them, as they both seem like the same question to me. I’m also still trying to add ます instead of です on the end of つもり to make it polite, even though it’s not a verb.

Finally added the final 4 lessons of N5!!!

screenshot_20190113-132632

That means I’ll get to use the “cram all N5” option soon.

Over on WK, I added the remaining level 10 kanji and all the vocal that is initially unlocked - so finally got to 0/0 after what seems like ages! Maybe a couple of levels. Just guru-d some of the initial level 10 kanji so got some vocab to learn again now, LOL.

I also tried out Torii, after installing the apps for PC/phone ages ago. My aim was to use it for non-WK vocab, but just do the main course on it in JLPT order. Anyway, I’m having troubles using it on my phone which is a shame, and don’t know if I’ll stick with it, or turn off the WK vocab, as I’m seeing lots of duplicates from there, but enjoying seeing the hiragana/katakana vocab.

The user is called Nukemarine.
The first part of the Core2k is here: https://www.memrise.com/course/1091685/llj-05-core-2k6k-vocabulary-optimized-pt-1/

He actually made a whole bunch of courses that are supposed to take you from beginner to literacy. So it starts with Hiragana and Katakana and includes Tae Kim and the Shin Kanzen Master series. The whole guideline is here:

But after being disappointed with Memrise’s changes he decided to stop making courses so obviously it is unfinished.

I never used any of the other courses but I was very happy with the Core 2k.

Torii is here https://community.wanikani.com/t/torii-srs-learning-application-for-vocabulary/31295. It can sort lessons by the Core10k, JLPT levels, Wanikani level, or Kana-only Mode. I believe it has full audio, and has a bunch of example sentences for each word, so it’s really useful. But you have to download it to your computer, there’s no website that hosts the content. It’s completely free though. You could pay 20$ for the “premium” features but it’s not necessary. They just give you more lines for notes and custom lists. Also has a free mobile app.

Good morning everyone!

  • Today, no mistakes on WK…yay, but for some reason it is hard for me to reproduce the words on KaniWani because of kanji combo. Might need to use them often. I checked on WKstats and I would level up soon. I can’t wait for it to happen!
  • Got my 30 day streak batch!
    newbadge
  • I only got this wrong, I should’ve think more carefully. It’s “I want you” not “I want to”
  • Not going to add new lessons, since I still had to study more about てほしい、てくれる、and こと. Got to use the dictionary
  • Yesterday I use most of my time reading Graded Lessons from this, the materials are quite good and I like how they compile the grammar incrementally.

@Jul3 I don’t know why, but I don’t like Torii I stopped using it, maybe because it’s slow on PC and the mobile app kept crashing. I now use Renshuu instead to add the vocab of the N5. I think you should probably try both to get a feel which one you like to keep.
@lopicake I had memrise subscription but didn’t continue since I didn’t feel any good progress despite the gaming system. I now limit my usage of app using WK, BunPro and Renshuu only. Renshuu has more example sentences from users, also multiple choices for grammar than BP, so I think it’s a good supplement.

I’ve done each day for over a month, but there’s a timing quirk, so my streak keeps getting broken. I still consider it a useful exercise, but the quirk is annoying.

Finished my reviews and wow I had a bad session this time. But they were just early N2, so I’ll eventually learn them in detail with time.

Finished 3課 of 完全マスターN2文法. Reviewed the differrences between:

~ではじめて
~上で
~次第
~て以来・~てこのかた
~てからでないと・~てからでなければ

Only missed 3 out of all the comprehension questions. : )

Thanks for the info! I’ll check out Torii since it sounds like it can fill the gaps I’m looking to fill.

@jamie Sounds like Renshuu might be worth checking out too. Thanks.

I ended up taking yesterday off from lessons. I did my reviews once during the day. I’ve noticed I’ve gotten a bit slack about having at least two review sessions in a day. So I’ll need to figure out when I can add another one.

Had to finish WK and BP while on the go, so only on mobile.

  • Halfway to level up WK, I just hope I wouldn’t mess this up
  • Had one mistake for BP, again くれる but this time missing て to connect two phrases, not the target grammar point. Must be very careful to combine て, にいく and くれる at the same time.
  • Still not adding new lessons, instead I’ll try using cram for N5 lessons today. I also had grammar difficulty on Renshuu that I have to tackle even on the same level. I feel that Renshuu lessons are harder due to more conjugations.

Wk and BP reviews and almost skipped lessons but then I was like “It is okay to take one day off a week from lessons, but do I want to start a streak of no lessons days? NOPE!”. So I finished off the last vocab lessons from level 7 on WK. It is nice to see the number of lessons waiting slowly grow smaller, it almost looks manageable now! (I had like 200 lessons on level up to 8 because of lingering vocab from level 6 and ALL level 7 vocab…)

BP I did two lessons: 前に and と (quotation). I really practiced in which order in front of/before works. I did Duolingo for a while and I could never figure out which object went where. If I said 私前にあなた, I could never figure out if I was in front of you or you were in front of me. The answer (hopefully I haven’t confused it again) is to read it from the back “you” “in front of/before” “I/me”. I’ve noticed this seems to be true of a lot of those things, that basically the word order is reversed against what I’m used to. And I meant to come up with an example or two, but they flew away before I could write them down. (I really need to practice writing!)

I think I can thank みさ先生 for the reverse order thing. It came up in a video on her 11 study tips for learning Japanese. She showed anime and showed how subtitles should be almost completely read backwards (in many cases) to get the Japanese word order the same. So the last part of the english translation would be the first part of the Japanese sentence (except for subject). Obviously this wasn’t always true. And it made me aware that maybe going backwards would help me, and I think I can finally feel confident that I will probably get these things right.

Done WK and BP this morning on mobile.

  • Leveled up WK just according to wkstats schedule, average level up is 9 days (down 1 day). Can’t go any faster since I can’t go full speed  I’ll add 25 lessons today. I’m happy as long as I can hit my goal of level 35 this year.
  • One mistake on BP, for grammar てくれる, this time it was the past tense. I entered present tense  Silly mistake, I should have to think more before entering answer.
  • I’m gonna study more about てくれる and てほしい, seems like I’m still confused because they are similar in terms of other people doing something.
  • Not adding new lessons on BP.
  • My writing seems to be behind, I’ll practice writing and reading more today.

I took a 4 month break from my studies and just jumped back in today. I did all my reviews on BunPro, but now I still have 990 reviews left on WK and Its driving me insane. Its gonna take a while to chip away at that so i can get back to 0/0ing every day.

BunPro will help keep me motivated though, because at least I can make progress here while I chip away at WK.

てほしい is I want you to do something. (Don’t confuse this with たい which is I want to do something)
これを食べてほしい。 (I) want (you) to eat this.
In this case it could be because it’s healthy or super delicious or something. Usually authority figures/parents would use a command like 食べなさい or 食べな or something but this is fine too.

てくれる means something is done for me or given as a favor to me (or whoever received it.)
これを食べてくれた。 (You) ate this (for me.)
In this case, you could be trying out an new recipe for the first time. It comes out meh and you’re kind of sad. But your friend comes along and sees you are disappointed and eats it and says it’s delicious! They ate it (in spite of the taste) for your benefit/happiness/whatever.

You can even combine them.
これを食べてくれてほしい。 (I) want (you) to eat this for me.
In this case, it could be the exact same scenario as above but in this case your friend is gawking at the concoction you made and you’re staring them down and slowly walking toward them…
Or you hate sashimi, but there’s sashimi on your plate at a work party and you’d really prefer not to eat it. So you ask your coworker to eat it for you.

Hope this helps.

Did my BP reviews, the early N2 are starting to come back again. Last week I had <25 reviews a day, and now I’m getting >50.

Completed 5課 and 6課 of 完全マスターN2!I actually find it easier to study from than the N3 book. The explanations are clearer, it has short comprehension quizzes for each individual grammar point, and just seems more well laid out than the N3 one, huh.

Just manage to set my reviews count to 0. I’m so happy!

Wow thank you for the explanation. This helped a lot.
Yes, sometimes I had it wrong with たい where I should have answered with てほしい

Finally started level 8 items on WK! Wooo! All radicals and one kanji, so my normal 15 lessons. Also did reviews, and even fit in an evening review so I wasn’t slammed with as much this morning, yay!

Did BP reviews and added ~した~ (verb modifying noun) and けど. ~した~ is kinda misnamed in my opinion, but anyway. Only made one mistake yesterday and hopefully I’m slowly busting a lot of my ghosts from last week’s grammar points. I have around 10-11 ghosts (since I added a new one yesterday). Is there somewhere I can see a definite answer to how many I have? Rather than just seeing how many I’ve had in reviews for the last 24?

  • Surprised to see 109 WK reviews this morning, that’s a lot. Got 7 mistakes…I’m already forgetting older kanji
  • Did BP, making mistakes for new lessons てすみません, てみる, のは
  • Also forgetting the normalizer の already.
  • I should make a mental connection てみる and try (I kept visualizing see 見る instead

I did the same thing when I first learned it. I just reconciled it as “Try and see if…” which is pretty close. And then just hone in on the try part.

Today I did my reviews but I’m getting a lot of them wrong because they’re my leeches. Not so worried because I can reinforce them better once I get to their appropriate sections in 完全マスター.

Finished 7課:
~に関して
~をめぐって
~にかけては
~に対して
~にこたえて

It was really easy. I love when the grammar points are super distinct from each other.

On a seperate note: I’m determined to finish the book I’m reading in Japanese by this weekend. It’s a really long book (I’ve been reading it on and off for a month now), but it’s not bad at all…but also I really want to read Kiki’s Delivery Service, and I can only tackle one book at a time right now.

Reviews everywhere except KW. I need to get back on that horse. Literally every item started there is currently waiting in my review pile and I have a huge amount of lessons that have become available. I will see if that or more writing/reading practice will make its way in as my next Japanese study stuff to become habit.

WK did 10 kanji and then switched to 5 vocab. Trying to do all kanji lessons for my 15 daily lessons felt too much. The awesome thing is that it feels good knowing I’ve now started to process of leveling to lvl 9. I also counted my remaining lessons and remaining days until radicals guru and I should have 15 lessons every day until the radicals guru in the morning and unlock new lessons so I will have lessons on that day.

I did two BP lessons: の中で ~ が一番 ~ and どこ. If I’d had more time I would have done three. Since I skipped doing lessons for a day, I need to do 3 lessons on 4 days and 2 lessons on the rest to finish N5 on Jan 31, which is my goal. I hope to have time to do 3 today.
