Have you done your BunPro Review today?

Nice catch with the highlighting “that”, I will fix this :+1:

Zero:d BP reviews, yesterday. Also this morning I had the fourth review of a lot of ghosts, so reduced that count (thankfully). Of course, I wouldn’t want to strangle the ghosts as much by the time I exorcise them if it wasn’t that I see them over four days because I only do reviews once a day. >_>

I reduced the count on WK a bit yesterday. So all good.

Looking at where I am, with I don’t know how many Torii reviews (I haven’t dared opening the app), and a bunch of WK reviews. I’m trying to decide how I want to do this. On Tuesday I fly to Japan for a couple of days of sightseeing in Tokyo, and then setting down roots in Kyoto for my one year there. I’ll be going to Japanese language school, so I will have daily lessons (weekdays only, but anyway) and homework. Plus I know since doing it at another school before (for just a month) that it is beneficial to do more than the required.

The question will be, what will that be? When we meet new grammar in class, I can always add that point on BP. But what do I do about WK? And how do I want to learn the vocabulary I meet in class? I can use Torii, of course. But I also want to make sure I don’t bury myself in SRS, when I’ll already be spending a lot of class time and home work time on Japanese. You guys have any suggestions? Tips/advice? (And I haven’t even mentioned reading here, or listening practice, or speaking practice. Which are a bit harder to quantify. I think I’ll join one of the book clubs on WK for regular reading practice after I settle in for a bit.)

This is nice. Thank you, really helps to remember these grammar points.

I’ve read in the dictionary that phrase can also use こと. What I don’t understand is what is the purpose of という in ということ instead of just こと. I’m confused with the meaning of noun + という + noun which means “is called”
It seems that BP only highlight verb to be in conjunction with こと

Here’s an excerpt from the dictionary:
The normalizer koto turns not just a verb or adjective but an entire sentence into a noun phrase.

Zero:d BP. Didn’t have time to reduce WK pile. Short report today. ^^’

I have gone through a half of N5 by today. Since I am at about N2 this is as expected and maybe I could do it faster, but I am progressing carefully. There are some items I am mixing up or do not remember that precisely.
Somewhat unusual thing is to see a majority of に行く instead of へ行く.
Like 学校に行く
It seems like the reason is coz the focus is on “I go to school with a purpose to study there” - or whatever purpose.
Still, sounds unusual and I subconsciously say へ行くall the time :sweat_smile:

Yeah という has a lot of uses and it get tacked on to so many of the grammar points in the higher JLPT levels that I kind just accept it’s existance anywhere without really thinking too hard of what it’s actually doing.

So that’s to say take whatever I say with a grain a salt. But it seems like という main role is specifying whatever comes before as being related to what comes after.

The grammar point you mention Noun+という+Noun is doing that.
" A game that is specifically Mario Party." マリオパーティというゲーム。
Though in normal English we’d say “A game called Mario Party”. And that’s technically the literal translation as well since it’s derived from と言う.

So ということ would be from と言う+事, where 事 is a generic thing/matter/event and と言う is specifying it. 事 is a noun so it’s acting just like I mentioned above.

I finally buckled down yesterday and just mowed through all my WK reviews. Zero:d BP as always, getting low on BP reviews (less than 5) so of course we got new N5 grammar, haha. Timing.

Gotten my Bunpro lessons done for today but haven’t touched any new points. I’ll do that tomorrow.
Also got my Torii down to zero and learned the next 15 words. 130/610 N5 vocab learned so far most of which I already know thanks to WK, however there are still some new Kanji in between there. I might pick up WK soon again but on a slow pace.

WK level up. Completing iKnow for current level.
Generating ghosts for といってもいい and といわれている (they are so similar). Two days left to finish N4, then I’ll switch to books and only doing reviews on BP to increase accuracy. I don’t think I’m ready for N3 :joy:

A lot of uses! I’m still confused even after reading maggiesensei notes, seems like I have to read it a couple of times before it sticks

I can’t remember why this made me want to talk about relative clauses, but I’m going to talk about them now anyway:

I feel like it’s important to realize just how incredibly crucial it is to get used to understanding (and possibly creating) relative clauses; where in English we’d say, “(a) [noun] that ______” or “(a) [noun] called ______,” the order gets flipped entirely backwards in Japanese and is instead, “______-called [noun].”
This particular use of “that” disappears completely in Japanese though, either because it’s unnecessary or because it’s simply built into the meaning that’s imparted by relative clauses: “(a) [noun] that ______” in Japanese is just “______-[noun].”

This is perfectly normal and it is everywhere in language.
It’s just how it works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Keeping up reviews on WK and BP, yesterday. Today is final packing and tomorrow I’m off to Japan, arriving on Wednesday. (Slightly after midnight my normal time zone, but mid-morning Japanese time.)

Safe flight and have a fun trip!

Today added all 5 of the new BP grammar points below where I’m currently up to. I’m glad they’ve been added!

Over on WK, got my first burn reviews recently. Been weird seeing those old kanji come with with so few strokes. Got some of the radicals wrong, and also, because of getting the “ground” radical wrong, I put that in for the “one” kanji, so got that wrong. Been adding new kanji and vocab from my new level as I go as well, and back to lessons 0 again.

Was out and about all weekend so didn’t get time to add anything new on Torii or do any reading. I’ll like to get back on reading tonight and some writing and maybe add some more BP grammar points as I’m keen to learn more.

おはようございます。

  1. I just zeroed BP reviews today.
  2. Study Streak 121.
  3. I usually zeroed my WK reviews at night nowadays. Right now I have 18 items to review on WK.
  4. I also zeroed some of my Kitsun decks. Only Katakana and N5 decks though. Not yet my own Mining Deck :sob: still more than a hundred to review there. Though I feel good adding Japanese words I just know mostly from my Japanese listening activities (usually from watching Japanese drama on TV). And I haven’t zeroed my 10k Kitsun optimized either. But if I write something like this here on this BP forum, usually they’d soon be zero.

  1. Some BP screenshots

Answered 何も instead of 何か。

My first try 作りたいと思う instead of 作ろうと思っている。

My second try 作ると思っている instead of 作ろうと思っている。

My third try was correct.

Got many ghosts for humble forms, still can’t differentiate between おーする、おーになる、おーいたす
Finished earlier level on iKnow, starting at 9% at the current level WK out of 111. So many vocabulary words for each level WK :joy:

I found that も particle is usually used for negative sentence. I think it’s easier to remember that way.

I’ve zeroed BP and Torii again today. Added new Vocab to Torii once more. Tomorrow I should have a bit more time to also add new BP points again.

Last night I added 3 new grammar points on BP. Did my WK and kept adding lessons as they came up, burnt some more items, failed to burn at least one. I bought the “Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary” and used it as a reference to practice writing kanji, as easier than looking up stroke order on Jisho.org. I just went through from the beginning and wrote down any kanji that I knew until I got tired. It was good using my experience from some months ago of writing kanji to write the new ones here. I should continue through the book writing out the kanji. I think you get a better feeling for the kanji this way. However, I didn’t try and put meaning and reading together with writing. I also read a chapter for the WK bookclub and really enjoyed it, lots of things seemed to have come together to help me to understand it, grammar from BP, kanji from WK and elsewhere, vocab from Torii etc. It was good seeing that studying be useful to reading!

Today was working through my new words on Torii and grammar points on BP. Had a big BP review session just before lunchtime which was a bit exhausting. I often get 持待/ もま mixed up in my BP reviews. Did some more kanji writing from my book, continuing where I left off, with practise of some of the more complex ones from yesterday. Some of the radicals today I’m not great at writing, like the main one on the right in 泳.

Finished all grammar points for N4. Level up to 39.
Not going to N3 yet. Going to increase accuracy for BP until WK and iKnow both finished for the N4 level.

Thanks, @nanda, @Jul3, and @Andulien!

I am now in Tokyo and very tired. I need to go buy dinner in a sec or I might just skip it and go to bed now. (Which I’d prefer not to do, since it is only 6 pm.)

Due to me doing BP reviews yesterday before getting on my first flight, I didn’t lose my streak on BP. I’ll have a really nice big number in a couple of days! Also did reviews just now.

I also hit WK reviews yesterday morning too, but that was because I had like 11. I’m not sure I’ll get to them today. It is more important I stay awake late enough, but not too late. (I’ve done that too, because I could get a seventh wind or whichever number I’m up to.)

Added 3 new grammar points to Bunpro! Quite similar to previous points so had to compare the differences. Things like 必要 for verbs instead of nouns, and more よう things, again I think it’s a different point as it’s for verbs instead of nouns.

My Torii lessons today were funny because the first two words were both たざねる, but with completely different meanings (and kanji). I thought it was a repeating audio bug at first, lol.
