I might be wrong about it, but I don’t think people use てみる in third person…
Similar to how ～たい becomes ～たがる to talk about other people.
Other ways of talking about this could be:
彼は…殺してみるって。
He said he is going to try to…
彼は…殺そうとする。
He is trying to…
But the meaning is not exactly the same as of plain てみる, hmm…

今日はね、「預かる」の使い方を間違ってしまった気がする。ホテルのチェックインの前に、フロントに「荷物を預かっても」頼んだんだけど、「荷物を預かってもらっても」の方が良かったよね。預かり身が逆だよね😅

I might’ve messed up the usage of あずかる today. I wanted to leave luggage at the hotel until check in time, and instead of asking “can I leave the luggage with you” I said something like “can I take care of my luggage”. But hotel employee (as per usual), accepted my bag without blinking or even saying nihongo jouzu, so all is well that ends well.

Probably would make more since to use 殺そうとする even if it could be used with third person, because he would have probably had to kill someone before in order for me to know that he is bad at killing, and from my reading the volitional and とする seems to have more of an attempt meaning whether it be for the first or thousandth time, while てみる is try for the first time.

Upon a third look I think it may be able to be used with third person, however it probably is more natural to use volitional and とする as you probably don’t know if it is their first time trying something. I haven’t been able to find anything saying that you can’t use it in third person, but I also haven’t found any example sentence in which it is used in third person. If I find anything concrete, I’ll make sure to say.

I think the explanation you received is a bit off.
てみる can be used in third person.
彼はおばあさんを殺してみる is not ungrammatical.
He is planning a murder. He first experiments to see if his method of murder is appropriate by killing an old woman, as a preliminary exercise, before killing his real target.

てみる can be used for ‘I am not 100% sure if it’s a good thingy, so I’m going to try it out, just a little bit,’ etc.
