This sentence made me realize that while 多い and たくさん can both be translated “a lot, many”, they work a little differently.
You wouldn’t say “多い友達がいる”, but you can say:
友達が多い。
たくさんの友達がいる。
友達がたくさんいる。
It seems that the reason for 多い to not combine well with いる is that いる is already implied in the definition. From a dictionary:
多い： ① 数や量がたくさんある
Maybe people more familiar with the nature and history of i-adjectives can explain it better
