I think writing kana or looking up the correct kanji are both good options. The only wrong option is using kanji you don’t know without checking whether you got the right one. 
ちなみに、「フリガナ」というのは漢字の上に掛けているあの文字です。漢字の代わりに使える文字は平仮名か片仮名ということなんです。

Assuming you do check if the kanji selected is the correct one, it shouldn’t be much of a problem whatever you decide on, but if you keep doing as you are, it will be good for yourself too look back at older entries in the forum and see how much you’ve progressed since then. Good work.
