～てほしい is used when you want someone else to do something for you.
お水を持ってきてほしい - I want [you] to bring me some water.

～したい is used when you want to do something.
お水を飲みたい - I want to drink water.

Is 試(こころ)みる or 試(ため)す more appropriate here? Jisho says 試みる is N1 (which seems really high!) while 試す is N3, but its definitions for 試みる seem a bit closer to how you would say this sentence in English.

I think you could use がんばる here - to try hard, persevere.
I’m still a beginner so take this with a grain of salt.

You’re looking for がんばる.
試みる and 試す are more like testing or sampling something one time, while がんばる has to do with your feeling of trying hard.

I would say to be consistent with tenses, so since 今日 is the present tense, probably write だから instead of だったから. I understand you wrote this at the end of the day so your birthday already feels over and done with, and in English this is fine, but I dunno… it doesn’t sit quite right with me while I’m reading Japanese. Feel free to disagree with this as it’s just my opinion, not fact.

Hmmm, if I were to fix this one I’d go with:
毎日書く文を書かないで寝るところだったのに。
But this is because I’ve never used やがて in a sentence in my life, so that might be OK too haha.
