Policeman: May I have a look at your driver’s license?
Driver: Sure.
Where does the “May I(…)” come from? Is it because いたす is used to talk about you or your group so it can’t mean anything else?

“May” was used to express modesty of いたす.
Can I have the honor of looking at your driving license, sir (madam)?
Unfortunately, it is impossible to translate this sentence literally into English without adding some construction used for asking permission like can, may, could, etc 
As you can see, it is merely an approximation of humble conjugation.
It is because Japanese and English are not related, therefore translating 1:1 in many cases is impossible.
