Vocab Update – Dictionary Definitions, Ghosts & Self-Study

:bunprogold: BOO! :ghost:

This Halloween, scare yourself silly with 100+ Vocab Ghosts in your Review queue!

We have released THREE major Vocab updates.
So without further ado:

:green_book: 1. JMDict Dictionary Definitions for Vocab

We have added Dictionary Definitions to all Vocab words on Bunpro!
The new info can be seen next to the Details section:

These have been sourced through JMDict, an open-source, community powered Japanese dictionary database.

JMDict powers most online Japanese dictionaries out there, and many of you may be familiar with this amazing project.

We hope that the addition of Dictionary Definitions directly to the Vocab pages will help save you a lot of time spent tabbing to other dictionaries (that all essentially show the same data).

NSFW definitions

If you have your “Show NSFW Content” set to “No” (the default) in the General settings, definitions marked as vulgar or profane will be blurred out by default.

You can click on the blurred definitions to reveal them.

:ghost: 2. Vocab Ghosts

Ghosts are now available for Vocab!
They function the exact same as Grammar Ghosts.

They will be generated automatically (or not at all) based on the new Vocab-specific Ghost Review settings in the Review Settings page.

As with Grammar Ghosts, you can also create Vocab Ghosts manually, on a per sentence basis, using the sentence-menu (click the ︙) in the Examples section:

:bowing_woman::headphones: 3. Vocab Self-Study Sentences

The ability to create Self Study-Sentences for Vocab has also been added.

Now at the bottom of the Vocab Example sentences, you’ll find the familiar “Add Self-Study Sentence” button.

Like with Grammar, you can use our special syntax to create yourself custom study questions.
These are added to your Review queue and have SRS levels the same as regular Reviews.

亜(あ) Furigana Answers!

We have also recently allowed you to add furigana to your answer, in addition to the text surrounding the answer.

E.g. In the screenshot, the answer (北 – north) is added as 北(きた).
Wrapping it in full-width Japanese parenthesis makes it function as any other furigana’d word in Bunpro.

When it comes to submitting your answer, submit just the part in hiragana!
So if the answer is 食べる, the furigana will 食(た)べる, and the correct input will be just taberu.

Like with Grammar, you can keep track of both your Vocab Ghosts and Self-Study sentences on the Dashboard, under the “Progress” section.

That about wraps it up!

Another quality of life update for Vocab that our wonderful users can hopefully all benefit from.

We read all feedback, please comment below if you have any feedback at all, or if you notice anything odd.

As always, happy studying!

Quick question regarding this update. Is it possible to click on a vocabulary word in a review question to see this definition?

For example:

Right now if I press the word, I can show/hide furigana, but would be great to click on a word to see it’s definition.

How are minimal ghosts supposed to work again?
I did a review session where I got a certain number of things wrong on my first attempt, but successfully entered them during the final “clean-up” phase of the session. I always assumed that I would only get a ghost if I messed the same sentence up again during the clean-up, but actually I got 19 vocab ghosts.
Or did I misunderstand this, and it means that I got these ghosts because I had already messed up those specific sentences at least once at some point in the past?

First we got grammar, now we’re getting fully fledged vocab support, the pace at which bunpro team is developing bunpro is honestly insane. ありがとうゴーストざいます👻 (Imagine if we got Kanji support one day, that would honestly make bunpro be the end all be all for any japanese learner out there.)

My Vocab ghosts are showing up as grammar reviews and getting mixed in with my grammar. Is there something I can do to fix this?

I’m not too clear on the furigana part of the update. Does this mean that for fill-in-the-blank reviews we can answer in Kanji, with the furigana in fixed-width parentheses?

Time for that 9999 ghost badge!!!

Hey… sorry to be that person, but I already found a bug with this. When I go through my “grammar only” tab, ghost reviews for vocab (which I don’t even know how I have already lmao) are showing up here.

Edit: Someone already commented this. My bad. I hope there is a fix soon.

This exists for some of the earlier levels/sentences.
We’re currently building a parser so we can automate doing it for all content!

Sorry for the confusion, added this section to the post to clarify a bit more:

When it comes to submitting your answer, submit just the part in hiragana!
So if the answer is 食べる , the furigana will 食(た)べる , and the correct input will be just taberu .

Unfortunately this still requires hiragana input!

@Codytravels

Thanks for the report!
We’ve fixed the bug mentioned. Splitting should be working properly again!

@psim
There was a bug with some of the Ghosts being generated.
Should now be fixed!

Thank you so much!

What action do you have to do to pull up the pop-up? I’m on android (understanding that is not there for all words, but potentially earlier words). Thanks!
