Hey Everyone! :raising_hand_man:

俺の地域は風がやばいけど、みんなの住んでるところはどう?風が強くて外が寒い日は、あったか〜いお家で大人しくBunproを使って勉強しててください。

さて…

Today, we will be covering…

What in the what is that?

Believe it or not, this is actually a kanji.

Low at both ends, protruding in the middle. Medium height.

How is it read?

It is read as とつ

Any guesses on what this means when used as slang?

If you answered ‘to storm in’ you are correct!

But…that doesn’t fit the definition! Well, we’ll get into that in a little bit!

Origin :open_book:

I have tried to find the actual origins of this word, but it seems like no one really knows where exactly it started. However, people suspect that it started on either bulletin boards (such as 2ちゃんねる) or in the gaming community. Although the exact origin is not known, people assume that the gaming community had a big role in creating this slang.

Why do people think gamers played a big role with this slang?

Believe it or not, people did not always use the word 凸. This is actually an evolved form of the phrase 突撃してくる, which means, ‘I’m going to storm/charge in’, which was a phrase that was used a lot in many different video games when you just wanted to go in and attack. However, if you have ever played any online games, you would know that less time typing and more time playing is better. Because 突撃してくる was a fingerfull, it was abbreviated to とつしてくる, to 凸してくる, and eventually る was added to 凸 to make the verb 凸る.

Where did the 凸 part come from?

The answer is very very simple. Just like some of the other slang I have introduced, it was a typo, and people just went with it.

As time passed, this word started to leak into the non-internet world.

Before 凸 spread to the public, it was still only used by the gaming community and was used with the nuance of 突撃.

Lets take a look at some examples of how it was used:

プレイヤー1:おーい、みんな準備できた?
プレイヤー2&3:まだ
プレイヤー1:じゃ、俺一人で凸してくるね。

  • Player 1: Yoo, y’all ready?
    Player 2&3: nope
Player 1: k, charging in alone.

配信者:お前らふざけるな。周りの迷惑になるからリアル凸すんなって何回言ったらわかるんだよ。

  • Streamer: You guys gotta cut it out. How many times do I need to tell you guys not to suddenly come and meet me because it causes a scene?
Examples with furigana

プレイヤー1:おーい、みんな準備(じゅんび)できた?
プレイヤー2&3:まだ
プレイヤー1:じゃ、俺(おれ)一人(ひとり)で凸(とつ)してくるね。

  • Player 1: Yoo, y’all ready?
    Player 2&3: nope
Player 1: k, charging in alone.

配信者(はいしんしゃ):お前(まえ)らふざけるな。周(まわ)りの迷惑(めいわく)になるからリアル凸(とつ)すんなって何回(なんかい)言(い)ったらわかるんだよ。

  • Streamer: You guys gotta cut it out. How many times do I need to tell you guys not to suddenly come and meet me because it causes a scene?

As you can see from the second example, 凸 was sometimes used with the meaning of ‘going to meet someone by surprise’, since the word 突撃, which means to to ‘attack/charge’ has the nuance of ‘surprise’. It was and still is used this way when a viewer of a streamer locates the streamer and goes to meet them.

Different types of 凸

リアル凸
When it is used in real life, it is used with the meaning that someone came to a physical location unannounced.

Example:

昨日先生に家凸された。

  • Yesterday, my teacher gave me a surprise visit at home.
Example with furigana

昨日(きのう)先生(せんせい)に家(いえ)凸(とつ)された。

  • Yesterday, my teacher gave me a surprise visit at home.

Social media 凸
When used on social media, it is used when someone slides into your DMs.

Example:

FF外の人から凸多いから少しの間鍵垢にする。

  • People out side of the ‘follow-follower’ circle is DMing me so, I’m going to make my account private
Example with furigana

FF外(がい)の人(ひと)から凸(とつ)多(おお)いから少(すこ)しの間(あいだ)鍵垢(かぎあか)にする。

  • People out side of the ‘follow-follower’ circle is DMing me so, I’m going to make my account private

Video games

When this is used in an video game, it is used how it was originally used, ‘to charge/storm in’.

Example:

みんなであの芋凸ろうぜ。

  • Let’s all storm that camper.
Example with furigana

みんなであの芋()凸()ろうぜ。

  • Let’s all storm that camper.

How is it used now? :man_shrugging:

Although 凸 is still used to this day, the nuance of ‘charge in/ storm in’ have slowly faded, and it is used closer to how 行く is used.

Lets take a look at some examples:

あそこは開店凸しないと並ぶ羽目になるから、今夜は徹夜だ。

  • If you don’t go to that restaurant as it opens, you are going to have to stand in line, so it seems like I’m going to be staying up all night tonight.

なんかあのラーメン屋美味いらしいから後で凸ってくる。

  • I heard that ramen shop is good, so I’m gonna go there later.
Examples with furigana

あそこは開店(かいてん)凸(とつ)しないと並(なら)ぶ羽目(はめ)になるから、今夜(こんや)は徹夜(てつや)だ。

  • If you don’t go to that restaurant as it opens, you are going to have to stand in line, so it seems like I’m going to be staying up all night tonight.

なんかあのラーメン屋(や)美味(おい)しいらしいから後(あと)で凸(とつ)ってくる。

  • I heard that ramen shop is good, so I’m gonna go there later.

みんなはどうか分からないけど、俺は凸とか凹見るたびにこれを思い出す。

なんかこういうのって面白くなかったような気がするけど、たまに遊びたくなる。買うほどは遊びたくならないけどね。
