Hey everyone!
If you have been using Instagram, Youtube, or Tiktok in the past few months, you have probably encountered this meme at least once.
えっほえっほ is an onomatopoeia that is used to describe the sound a person makes when they are running. It is usually used in media to emphasize that a person is running in a set rhythm. It can also be heard in 時代劇 when two people are carrying a carriage.
In scenes like this people use えっほえっほ as a way to keep rhythm so that they can move at the same pace.
Birth of a Meme
On Febuary 23, 2025, 津田雅之 (comparative literature scholar) posted a picture of a barn owl that Hannie Heere (photographer from the Netherlands) took on X.
As you can see from the picture, it kind of looks like the owl is running. Due to how cute this owl is and because it looks like this lil guy is running with purpose, the post got 300,000 likes.
Once this picture became popular, people started to post this picture everywhere on the internet. When this meme was at its peak, a X user by the name of うお座 posted this picture with the caption:
エッホエッホ
早くたかみなの具合が悪いからふざけないように国に伝えないと
エッホエッホ
Translation:
I need to tell everyone in Japan to not screw around because Takamina is sick.
This post initially got 60,000 likes, and because people found this format + the picture funny, people started to use this format by either changing the owl with another character or a person, along with some information they wanted to spread.
Meme Format
The format of this meme is quite simple. It starts with 「エッホエッホ」and ends with 「エッホエッホ」, and in between the エッホ, you insert a fact that you want someone to know immediately or a fact you just learned.
Examples:
Bunpro
Examples with furigana:
Bunpro

Is it a dead meme?
After the initial blow up of this meme, people considered this as a dead meme…until 松本(まつもと)かれん (from FRUITS ZIPPER) covered the meme on her video. This revived the meme for a bit.
Shortly after the coverage, うじたまい (a content creator) posted a video of herself dressed like the owl and reciting fun facts, following the meme format, in song form.
うじたまい’s video BLEW UP, but at the same time, people started to say that she killed the meme because other famous people and bigger corporations started using this format for promotion. Because these bigger influencers and corporations were using the meme for profit, it started to take the fun out of the meme for many people.
Although this meme is new, because it has been overused, some people are already over with it, but there are still people that like this meme format. Since this is an internet meme, it will leave (if it hasn’t already) as quickly as it started. So I can’t tell you for certain if this is a dead meme or not.
