Hey Everyone!
Today, we will be covering…
This word is actually a combination of the word ぬくもり and クオリティ, and is a word that is used with a similar meaning to the English word ‘Wholesome’.
Origin
Although the exact origins of it is unknown it is thought that it was first used in 2ちゃんねる. Around 2004, there was a TV commercial that used the phrase 「それが、東急クオリティ」, which became a meme on the internet, and some believe that this is where the idea for ヌクモリティ came from.
Although this is an older internet slang, you may come in contact with it. However, because it is older, you may not see it as often as some other slang I have posted about. This one hovers above the border between 死語 and 活語.
How is it used?
I mentioned above that this is similar to the English word ‘wholesome’, but in what sort of situation is it used?
ヌクモリティ is usually used when someone leaves a heartfelt comment on a thread, especially when the thread is of self-depricating nature or if the OP is asking for serious advice.
Examples:
- OP: I’m getting sick of life…
Reply 1: We’re all in this together!
Reply 2: What a softie! Jk you got this man!
OP: Thank you for such wholesome comments!
- Video OP: Recently too much stuff has been going on in my private life that I have gotten sick from all the stress. So, I am going to take a break for some time. I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience.
Reply 1: We will be waiting!
Reply 2: No need to worry about us! Prioritize yourself!
Reply 3: We’ll wait for however much time you need!
Reply 4: Hope you get all the rest you need!
Video OP: Everyone, thank you so much for the wholesome comments!

One famous example of ヌクモリティ is from a thread titled 「1時間以内に1000(replies)いったら生きる」. As you can probably tell from the title of the thread, the OP of this thread was not in the best headspace. The OP stated that they started this thread because if 1000 people commented, that would mean that many people cared enough about them to stay alive, and that would be enough motivation for them to stay alive.
This thread was a surprise to many people because not only did this person get 1000 replies, but because there were many comments telling him to stay alive. People on anonymous bulletin board sites still are brutal, but back then, being brutal to each other was the norm, and being ‘wholesome’ or ‘human-like’ was unheard of. Due to this, it surprised a lot of people that many or the participants of this thread put the trolliness aside to keep the OP alive. Since this was a very abnormal thing to happen on the internet, especially back then, this is still known as a famous ヌクモリティ event.
Although this word is similar to the word ‘wholesome’, the meaning changes when it is used in real life.
When it is used in real life and on social media, it is usually used to express a person’s warmheartedness, or used to express that something made them feel at home.
Examples:
- It’s been a long time since I’ve had my mom’s cooking, but oh my god, it’s so nice!
- Friend 1: You still send out letters? Aren’t texts sufficient?
Friend 2: Well, letters are nicer since they are more heartfelt, don’t you think?
Examples with furigana
- It’s been a long time since I’ve had my mom’s cooking, but oh my god, it’s so nice!
- Friend 1: You still send out letters? Aren’t texts sufficient?
Friend 2: Well, letters are nicer since they are more heartfelt, don’t you think?
Since this word is still balancing between the border of a 死語 and a 活語, it maybe rare to encounter it in the wild. If you like this word and want it to be used more, maybe you can start using it to give it a second life!
