推し

推（お）し？なにそれ？

推し is a thing or a person you like so much that you want to recommend it to someone.

Origin

推し is actually a slang that predates the internet! People began using this word when there was a アイドルブーム in the late 1900’s (the 80’s). During this time, people refered to their favorite member of a group as a 推しメン (short for 推しのメンバー). As time passed and the internet became popular, the word 推しメン was picked up by a community on ２チャンネル that were a fan of モーニング娘。, which was a popular idol group in the early 2000’s. Since liking an idol group like モー娘。was a niche thing (especially among grown adults) back then, although it was used on 2ちゃんねる, it stayed in that little community.

Things changed when AKB48 became famous. As AKB48 was rising, people in their fan base started to use 推しメン to refer to members they liked. The difference between this idol group and モー娘。is that AKB48 became BIG. They were everywhere. They were on poster, TV, ads, and their music was playing non-stop in many places. It is said that the word 推し was spread to ‘normies’ because of them.

There is one theory that AKB48選抜総選挙 being broadcasted live on TV, which is an election to decide who gets to be on the next single, was one of the reasons this word became popular among people outside of the Idol fanbase. During this event, even more people were exposed to the word 推し, and because the media explained that 推し is simply ‘something you like’, more people started to use it to refer to things they liked.

Another theory is that one of the songs they release was called 「チームB推し」.

推しなう

Although 推しwas originally a word only used to refer to idols, now it is used to refer to absolutely ANYTHING someone likes/

Examples (Original usage):

君の推しメンは誰？

Which member are you a fan of?

田中氏は誰推しなんですか？

Mr. Tanaka, who are you a fan of?

昨日推しメンが卒業宣言したから、今日は仕事に行く気が出ない。

I don’t feel like going to work today because the person I’m a fan of announced that they are retiring.

It is said that one of the reason this slang spread and became common is because being an オタク is not as stigmatized anymore. Due to this, people were less reserved about using this word outside of the community, without the fear of being labeled as a キモオタ.

What is the difference between a fan and a 推し？

ファン includes anyone that likes something or someone, but 推し has the nuance of a more ‘hardcore fan’. When you say you are a ファン of someone or something in Japanese, people will assume that you probably like them a normal amount, but if someone says that they are 〜推し people will know that you are not just a casual fan, but you spend a lot of time and money to support the group, brand, or person.

After the spread

After 推し spread across a wider audience, people started to make words related to 推し. Lets take a look at some of the more common words!

推し活

おしかつ. Short for 推し活動. This usually refers to fans doing something to support their 推し.
Examples: Buying merch/Going to shows/Buying specific merch, etc.

推し事

おしごと. This is similar to 推し活, but this one has a stronger nuance. This has the nuance of that they do things since they feel obligated to do them.
This is a play on words with the word お仕事.

箱推し

はこおし. Also known as 全（ぜん）推し. This is to be a fan of the ‘whole package’. People who consider themselves as a 箱推し will support the whole group instead of picking favorite out of the group.

推し変

おしへん. This term is used when a person changes who they are a fan of. This could be a change from one member to another within a group, or it could refer to a person changing what group they are a fan of.

単推し

たんおし. This is a word that is used to describe that you are a fan of one person and one person only. This is similar to 神（かみおし）推し, which is another word used to describe that you are a huge fan of one person only.

Although some of these words are only used in certain communities, simple ones such as 推し and 推し活 is used by an extremely wide range of fan bases. Due to this, no matter what kind of community you are in, you will most definitely see people use 推し or words containing the word 推し.

For example, my hobby could be considered to be very far from the traditional ‘オタク’ subculture, but when talking about equipment and tools, people will always use the word 推し to emphasize that they are a die hard fan of a brand or a specific product, especially when they want to recommend other people to use them.
